Tips and Tricks for Using Respondus Lockdown Browser

Set Links and Documents to Open in a New Window

To ensure that links in Moodle quiz questions open in a separate window when using Respondus, follow these steps:

  1. For Links to External Domains (websites):
    • When adding a hyperlink in a quiz question, create a hyperlink to the website you want students to use.

If links and files do not open in a separate window, students may get stuck on that page and be unable to navigate back to the quiz.

Allowing Students to Access a Website During a Quiz

There are two ways to permit website access while using Respondus LockDown Browser:

  • Enabling a Website in the Respondus Dashboard: This option allows students to access an entire external website during the quiz. The permitted website must be specified in the Respondus Lockdown Browser Dashboard settings before the quiz starts. For example, if you enable Wikipedia, students can navigate the entire site, including using the search function to find additional pages.
  • Linking to a Website in a Moodle Question: This option restricts students to a single, specific webpage. They can view only the linked page and cannot navigate to other sections of the site. For example, if you link to Wikipedia’s homepage, students can access that page but will not be able to search or browse beyond it.

Using Respondus with Zoom

We have configured Respondus to allow students to run it while in a Zoom session, provided they join the Zoom session before launching the Respondus quiz. This enables remote proctoring while maintaining quiz integrity.

Consider How Students Will Communicate with You During the Test

When administering a Respondus test, it is essential to consider how students can communicate with you while they write the test. There are several options, and regardless of which option you use, visit our knowledge based article to learn more.
