Respondus Tests: Best Practices for Communicating with Students

When administering a Respondus test, it's essential to consider how students can communicate with you while they write the test. There are several options, and regardless of which option you use, it is recommended to set up a Practice Quiz using the same settings as your Test/Exam with Respondus enabled.

Take the test in person:

If possible, the simplest solution is to suggest to students who know they will need extra support to come to class in person that day.

Secondary device:

You can suggest that the students use a secondary device, such as their cell phone or a tablet, to email you any questions or concerns during the exam.

Moodle Chat:

Set up a Moodle chat that you monitor during the test.

  1. In your Moodle shell, turn Editing on, select Add an activity or resource, and select Chat.

  1. Add the question to your test.

Create a Practice Quiz

This will allow students to download the LockDown Browser on their system and practice a quiz with the same settings as the exam.

  1. Create a practice quiz in Moodle.

  2. Add a few questions using similar question types that will be on the exam. If your exam uses essay-type questions, add one or more to the practice exam so students using dictation or screen reading software can ensure it works with the LockDown Browser.

  3. Enable Respondus for the practice quiz.  Use the same Respondus settings and also add to the practice quiz all links and resources your students may need for their exam.
