Infosec Advisory: The ‘Mother of all Breaches’ Data Leaked

Tags data breach

In early January 2024, cybersecurity researchers discovered the largest repository of leaked client data ever created currently being referenced as MOAB or “Mother of All Breaches”.  This repository includes records from thousands of meticulously compiled and reindexed leaks, web service breaches, and privately sold databases. From an impacted user’s perspective, they are at greater risk of sophisticated social engineering attacks, impersonation, or identity theft if their usernames and passwords remain unchanged or re-used.

You can use the publicly available tools below to determine if your corporate or personal accounts are impacted:

Examples of organizations associated with these breached records:

  • Tencent
  • Weibo
  • Myspace
  • X/Twitter
  • Deezer
  • LinkedIn
  • Adobe
  • Canva
  • VK
  • Dailymotion
  • Dropbox
  • Telegram
  • MyFitnessPal
  • Wattpad

In the event your accounts are impacted, we recommend you take the following precautions:

  • Change the passwords of impacted accounts. If you have reused an impacted password change any instance of its use on any website or platform.  Especially those services that handle financial transactions.
  • Set up and use Multi-Factor Authentication (2FA) wherever possible.
  • Be skeptical and verify legitimacy before trusting incoming communications. With such a massive amount of data available to hackers, it becomes easier to target users with well-crafted phishing emails, SMS phishing (Smishing) or voice phishing (Vishing) attacks.

If you require further assistance with password reset of your Cambrian accounts or suspect an account compromise, please contact the IT Service Desk immediately at 705-566-8101 x7370 for further investigation.
