What is Zoom?
Zoom is a web conferencing tool that enables live audio, video, and presentation options for professors and students.
There is no cost for students and students are not required to create an account. Zoom works on desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Professors may choose to use Zoom for classes, office hours or other meetings with students.
Do I have to use Zoom for my courses?
Check your email, Moodle course page, and Moodle announcements to see how your professors are planning to hold classes this term. If your professor is using Zoom for your course, they will notify you and should post or send you a link for joining the session.
How do I join a Zoom meeting?
You can join a meeting by simply clicking the meeting link (sent or posted by your professor) and following the on-screen instructions.
How do I sign up for a licensed Zoom account?
1. To activate your account, go to https://cambriancollege.zoom.us
2. Click “Sign in”.
3. Sign in using your Cambrian student email address (e.g., a00123456@mycambrian). The password is the one used to log into your email and to access any Microsoft Office applications.
4. For password troubles, contact the IT Helpdesk (705-566-8101 x 7370).
5. If prompted, follow the steps to add an alternate phone number, email address, or security question to complete your account.
6. Once you log in successfully, you have access to a Cambrian-licensed account.
Do I have to download Zoom?
While It is not usually required to download Zoom, it is recommended that you download the desktop or mobile app.
How can I download Zoom?
Zoom is available as a desktop application for PC and Mac and mobile application on iOS and Android.
Do I have to pay to use Zoom?
No, you can participate in all Zoom meetings for free.
What technology do I need to use Zoom?
You need a computer, tablet, or smartphone and reliable Internet access.
Do I need a webcam or microphone?
You can participate in calls without using a webcam or microphone. However, you will not be able to share video or audio of yourself.
If I have a webcam and microphone, do I have to use them?
You have the option to turn your webcam and microphone on or off during a Zoom meeting. Your professor should discuss whether your camera or microphone is necessary during class.
How can I turn on/off audio or video?
The options to turn on/off audio and video are located at the bottom of the screen.
- To turn on/off the camera, click Turn On Video or Turn Off Video.
- To turn on/off your microphone, click Mute or Unmute.
How can I ask a question (without a microphone)?
You can use the Chat feature in Zoom. Click the Chat button on the bottom of your screen and type your question in the chat box.
How do I share my screen?
You are only able to share your screen if the meeting host (your professor) allows you to do so. Click ‘Share’ in your meeting and choose the screen that you would like to share.
What should I do while participating in a Zoom meeting?
- Find a quiet space and minimize distractions.
- Use headphones with a microphone, if possible.
- Mute your mic when you are not speaking.
- Use the chat feature to ask questions.
- Join the Zoom meeting by phone if you have limited internet access or are experiencing technical difficulties.
Where can I find additional resources on using Zoom?
Note: Please be aware that our Cambrian College version of Zoom permits students to record teaching sessions for their own use and study if a faculty member is not already recording and sharing sessions. However, it is respectful to request permission of your faculty member and peers to do so. Under no circumstances do you have permission to record a Zoom session and share it publicly on any platform. Posting recordings of your faculty members or peers is a violation of the Cambrian College Code of Conduct and your academic record at the College may be negatively affected. The College appreciates your cooperation on this issue.
