Enrolling in Multi-factor Authentication for Board of Governors
Overview
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is a security measure that requires users to provide two or more forms of authentication before granting access to an account or system. It adds an extra layer of protection beyond just a username and password.
A simple example of Multi-Factor Authentication is withdrawing money from an ATM. To take money out of your bank account at an ATM, you need to insert your bank card (something you have) and provide your PIN (something you know). Missing either piece of identification will prevent the transaction
Pre-requisites
- Your Cambrian College Board of Governors credentials (user name and password)
- Your smart phone or tablet.
- A computer or secondary device to follow the setup instructions.
- An Internet connection
Follow the below instructions to login to your Cambrian College account and add the MFA authentication method to complete the enrollment process. Enrolment can be one or more of the following options:
- Using the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smart phone or tablet. With the app, you can approve login attempts (when your phone is connected to the Internet) or retrieve authentication codes when your phone is offline. This is the most convenient and and secure recommended method.
- Using a cell phone, or smart phone to receive an automated voice phone call to approve login attempts.
- Using a cell phone or smart phone to receive authentication codes by text messages (SMS).
Microsoft Authenticator Application
Step 1: Download and set up Microsoft Authenticator App on your phone
- Download and install the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator app based on your device as below:
Android Device
- To install the Authenticator app on an Android device, scan the QR code below.

- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app. Within the app, choose + Add account and then choose 'Work or school account'.

- To add account “Scan the QR code” visible on your computer. You will need to allow your phone to take photos while using the app to scan the QR code.

Apple Device
- To install the Authenticator app on an iOS device, scan the QR code below :

- Open the Microsoft Authenticator app. Within the app, choose + Add account and then choose 'Work or school account'.

- To add account “Scan the QR code” visible on your computer. You will need to allow your phone to take photos while using the app to scan the QR code.

Step 2: Sign into your Cambrian College Microsoft 365 Account to add MFA.
- Navigate to https://portal.office.com using any web browser.
- Log in with your firstname.lastname@cambriancollege.ca account. Click "Next". Now enter your password as shown below.

- You will be signed into your Microsoft 365 Homepage. In the bottom left corner, locate your profile icon (round icon with your initials or photo) and click on it, then click ‘View account.’

- On the next page, locate Security Info, you will click the ‘+’ sign to add sign-n method.

- From the drop down, select ‘Microsoft Authenticator’

- Select ‘Next’ on the ‘Start by getting the app’ dialog box in your web browser.

- Select ‘Next’ on the ‘Set up your account’ dialog box in your web browser.

- A dialog box with a QR code will be displayed. Leave this open while you proceed with Setting up the MS Authenticator on your device.

- If you are unable to scan the QR code, you can try entering the code manually in your phone.

Step 3: Approving Microsoft Authenticator on your computer.
- Once the QR code is scanned select ‘Next’. A notification is sent to the Authenticator app on your phone to test the account.
- Once the notification is approved by entering the number, the setup will be completed.

Step 4: Approving Microsoft Authenticator on your phone.
- Approve the notification in the Authenticator app by entering the number shown on your computer, and then select Next.
Phone Authentication using Text or Call
Step 1: Sign into your Cambrian College Microsoft 365 Account to add MFA.
- Navigate to https://portal.office.com using any web browser.
- Log in with your firstname.lastname@cambriancollege.ca account. Click "Next". Now enter your password as shown below.

- You will be signed into your Microsoft 365 Homepage. In the bottom left corner, locate your profile icon (round icon with your initials or photo) and click on it, then click ‘View account.’

- On the next page, locate Security Info, you will click the ‘+’ sign to add sign-n method.

Step 2: Addition of Phone and Verification by SMS or CALL
- Select 'Phone' from the Chose a Method drop-down list and then select 'Add'

- Under "What phone number would you like to use?", select your country or region from the drop-down list, type your phone number. If you select 'Text me a code' option and click Next, a 6-digit verification code will be sent to your phone and you will have to enter the code in the next page on your computer.

- Once you entered the code, you will get a message 'SMS verified. Your phone was registered successfully' select Done

- Under "What phone number would you like to use?", select your country or region from the drop-down list, type your phone number. If you select “Call me” option and select Next, you'll receive a phone call from Microsoft, asking you to press the pound (#) sign on your mobile device to verify your identity.

- After the call ended with successful verification, return to your computer and you will see the message 'Call answered. Your phone was registered successfully' select Done.
