Enabling Course Completion Tracking

Summary

Course completion tracking allows instructors to monitor and display student progress through a course. When enabled, students and instructors can see a visual checklist of completed activities, based on conditions you define (e.g., viewing an activity, submitting an assignment, passing a quiz).

Step 1: Enable Completion Tracking for the Course

  1. Go to your course homepage.
  2. Click Settings under Course Administration. Screenshot of the Course administration menu in Moodle with Settings circled.
  3. Scroll down to the Completion tracking section.
  4. Set Enable completion tracking to Yes. Screenshot of the Completion tracking section of the course settings in Moodle.
  5. Click Save and display at the bottom of the page.

Step 2: Set Activity Completion Criteria

  1. Go back to your course homepage.
  2. Turn Edit mode ON.
  3. Click Settings next to an activity or resource.
  4. Scroll to the Completion Conditions section.
  5. Choose a Completion option: none, students can manually mark as complete or add requirements. 
  6. Show activity as complete when conditions are met (e.g., viewed, submitted, passed) A screenshot of the Completion conditions of an activity or resource in Moodle.
  7. Click Save and return to course.

Repeat this for each activity or resource you want to track.

Step 4: Viewing Course Completion Progress

Go to Reports > Activity completion to view student progress.

Tips

  • Use completion tracking alongside restrictions to unlock modules only after students finish previous ones.
  • You can enable progress bars with the "Completion Progress" block.
