Copying Quizzes from one Shell to Another
Summary
This article explains how to export a Moodle question bank as a .xml file to share with another instructor or to import it into another shell.
Body
When you copy a quiz from one course shell to another, Moodle also copies the entire question bank associated with that course. This often results in large, cluttered question banks with duplicate or irrelevant questions, making it harder to manage content and potentially slowing down your course. Instead of copying the quiz activity, we recommend exporting only the relevant question bank category from the original course, importing it into the new course, and then recreating the quiz using those questions.
Step 1: Exporting the Question Bank (.xml Format)
In the Administration menu of the source course (the course we the quiz you want to copy) select
Question banks.
Click the share question bank link.
Select
Export
from the drop down menu.
Choose the
Moodle XML format
.
Under Export category, select the category of questions you want to share and uncheck write context to file.
Click
Export
questions to file.
Save the .xml file that downloads to your computer.
Share the file with your colleague (e.g., via email or OneDrive).
Step 2: Importing the Question Bank into Another Course
In the Administration menu of the destination course select
Question banks
.
Click the share question bank link.
Select
Import
from the drop down menu.
Choose
Moodle XML format
.
Click Choose a file, then upload the .xml file that was shared.
Click
Import
.
Moodle will confirm the questions were successfully added to the question bank.
